Getting Started with Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is a popular winter activity in Minnesota, where anglers can catch a variety of fish species, including walleye, northern pike, and perch. To get started, you’ll need to invest in the right gear and learn the basics of ice fishing. Equipment:

    • Ice auger: A device that drills holes in the ice to create fishing spots. Ice scoop: A tool used to remove snow and ice from the hole. Fishing rod and reel: The essential gear for catching fish.

The event is a 5K run/walk and a kids’ fun run, with a festival area that includes food, drinks, and activities for kids and adults alike.

The Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ Fun Run is an annual event that brings together the community to promote conservation and wildlife preservation.

“We have a cadre of volunteers,” Henke said. “We drill the holes and provide the kids with a bucket that has a fully-rigged rod and reel, ready to go (they get to bring the fishing kits home with them as well).” The bucket also includes some nontoxic, lead-free tackle, he added, along with a scoop and some other items to enhance the kids’ fishing experience. The volunteers also provide a warming shelter, and give some winter fishing tips, he added, noting that while the event is geared toward kids between the ages of 6-16, parents and younger/older siblings are also welcome to come join in the fun.

“We’re bringing together people of all ages to share experiences and learn from each other.”

      The Power of Shared Experiences

Fishing sessions are a great way to bring people together, fostering a sense of community and social connection. By sharing a common activity, individuals can break down barriers and build relationships across different age groups. The event organizers have taken a thoughtful approach to ensure that the fishing sessions are accessible to people of all ages and abilities. The 20 slots available for each session allow for a good balance between socializing and individual fishing time.
